    David Le

    Nationally recognized throughout the United States, David has won First Prize in the Florida Flute Association College Young Artist Competition, Hampton Roads Flute Faire Young Artist Competition, and has been a prizewinner of competitions sponsored by the Music Teachers National Association, National Flute Association, and the Tampa Bay Symphony.

Interview

Washington D.C. based flutist David Le leads a versatile career as a recitalist, chamber musician, and educator. As a soloist, Mr. Le won First Prize in the Young Artist Competitions of the Florida Flute Association, Hampton Roads Flute Faire, and has been a prizewinner of competitions sponsored by the Music Teachers National Association, National Flute Association, Raleigh Area Flute Association, and South Carolina Flute Society. Mr. Le can be heard on the McCormick Percussion Group’s album Plot: Music for Unspecified Instrumentation(Ravello Records, 2013), as soloist on the world premiere recording of Stuart Saunders Smith’s Winter. He also recorded as Principal Flute of the USF Wind Ensemble (Mark Records, 2014) and Peabody Symphony Orchestra (Naxos Records, 2019).

An avid chamber musician, Mr. Le is flutist of the Jayde Duo, with whom he presented an educational series at the Enoch Pratt Free Library, as well as concerts on the Ars Sacra Concert SeriesPenn Station Concert Series, among others. As an orchestral flutist, he  has performed with the Bel Cantanti Opera, Florida Lyric Opera, Experiential Orchestra, HUB Opera Ensemble, and the Peacherine Ragtime Society Orchestra. He attended the Marrowstone Music Festival for two seasons. Mr. Le has performed and recorded under esteemed conductors Marin Alsop, Leon Fleisher, Edward Polochick, and Leonard Slatkin.

A passionate educator, Mr. Le is the Flute Teaching Assistant at the University of Maryland, where he teaches flute lessons, flute technique/repertoire classes, a music appreciation class, and coaches chamber ensembles. With over a decade of experience, students of his private studio have won numerous competitions, scholarships, and attend universities throughout the United States. He formerly taught with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s OrchKids program and the OPUS Community Music School.

Mr. Le’s past engagements include recitals and/or master classes at the National Flute Association, Florida Flute Association, and Mid-Atlantic Flute conventions, as well as the CCBC Music Forum Series, Florida State University, University of Arkansas, University of Maryland Baltimore County, and the University of South Florida. Highlights of Mr. Le’s 2019-2020 season include recitals at the Arts Club of Washington and New Jersey Flute Fair, master classes at Penn State and Virginia Tech, and tours with the Peacherine Ragtime Society Orchestra.

David is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Maryland. Mr. Le earned a Master of Music degree from the Peabody Conservatory on full scholarship, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Florida, where he was the Presser Scholar and Distinguished Graduate in The Arts. His primary teachers are Sarah Frisof, Kim McCormick, and Marina Piccinini, with additional study with Aaron Goldman and Laurie Sokoloff.
