Shauna Thompson is an accomplished musician and educator, currently serving as the Associate Professor of Flute, Chair of the Woodwind Department, and Coordinator of Graduate Studies in the School of Music at Texas Christian University (TCU). With a passion for flute performance and a dedication to mentoring emerging artists, Dr. Thompson has made a significant impact in the world of music.
Dr. Thompson has been featured as a performer at multiple National Flute Association conventions and has graced the stage as a guest artist at various flute conventions, including those hosted by the Texas Flute Society, Kingsville, Waco, and Weatherford. Notable concerto performances include Chaminade’s Concertino with the Mesquite Symphony, the world premiere of Martin Blessinger’s Rhapsody for Flute and Orchestra with the Texas Christian University Symphony Orchestra, and Frank Ticheli’s Silver Linings with the Sugar Land Winds. Shauna recently released her first solo album, Reflections.
In her role as a flute professor at TCU, Dr. Thompson leads a highly competitive studio that includes undergraduate, Masters, Artist Diploma, and DMA students. Her commitment to nurturing talent is evident, with the first-ever DMA graduate in flute from TCU earning his doctorate under her mentorship in Spring 2019. Dr. Thompson’s students have consistently excelled, participating in prestigious competitions such as the Myrna Brown competition and various NFA competitions, as well as attending renowned summer music festivals like Aspen and Brevard. Her former students have gone on to successful careers as elementary school music teachers, band directors, private instructors, and university professors.
Dr. Thompson won the 26th annual Myrna Brown competition with the Texas Flute Society and was honored to return as a guest artist to their following convention. She has also garnered prizes in esteemed competitions such as the National Flute Association, Pittsburgh Flute Club, Claude Monteux, Frank Bowen, Mid-South Flute Society, and MTNA.
Dr. Thompson plays an active role in the flute community, currently serving as the Competition Coordinator for the National Flute Association. She has previously taken on key responsibilities as the coordinator of the NFA’s Professional Flute Choir Competition and the coordinator for the Texas Flute Society’s Donna Marie Haire competition.
Dr. Thompson’s education includes a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) and a Master of Music (MM) in flute performance from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, where she studied under the guidance of Brad Garner and Randy Bowman. She also holds a Bachelor of Music from Texas Tech University, where she studied with Lisa Garner Santa. Before joining the TCU faculty, Dr. Thompson served as the Consortium Instructor of Flute at the University of Evansville and held the position of principal flute with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. Her orchestral experience includes serving as principal flute with the Lubbock Symphony and second flute with the Midland Odessa Symphony Orchestra, in addition to performing with the Cincinnati and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestras.
